Students on our creative writing courses have always had it pretty good when it comes to the authors we invite in to speak to them. In the past couple of years, those on the course have been inspired by the likes of Jeffrey Archer, Jake Arnott, William Boyd, Nathan Filer, Rosamund Lupton, Jojo Moyes, David Nicholls, Tony Parsons and SJ Watson, among others, and these ‘visiting speaker’ sessions in which an author comes in with their literary agent are always a highlight of students’ time with CBC.
One particularly memorable session came in June, 2014, when Man Booker Prize-winning author Howard Jacobson visited us with his agent Jonny Geller. Howard spoke openly – and often hilariously – about his writing career, and the 15 students who were in attendance all spoke afterwards about how inspirational the evening had been and how it had encouraged them in their own writing. And, as one of that group has since signed a two-book deal with Hodder & Stoughton imprint Two Roads, we’re glad to say those aren’t just empty sentiments.
