Our reputation as a writing school that runs some of the most successful creative writing courses in the UK is well-established – a fact backed up by the huge number of applications that flooded in for our Three-Month Creative-Writing Course and Online Creative-Writing Course before last Monday’s deadline. But who knew that Curtis Brown Creative had made an impression on the Far East, too?
From 4-6 November, we will be running an intensive, three-day course over in Singapore as part of the this year’s Singapore Writers’ Festival – one of Asia’s premier literary events. And we’re very excited about getting over there to meet some talented new authors. Our ‘writing bootcamp’ – which we’re calling Writing Your Novel: To The End and Beyond – came about after the National Arts Council of Singapore approached Curtis Brown Creative and asked us to put together an event for the aspiring novelists of the island city-state. Director and agent Anna Davis was only too happy to oblige and once she’d stocked up on suncream and books by Suchen Christine Lim, Augustine Goh Sin Tub and Hwee Hwee Tan [does Wikipedia face], she enlisted bestselling novelist Jake Arnott – author of The Long Firm, He Kills Coppers and The House of Rumour, and co-tutor on the very first Curtis Brown Creative novel-writing course back in 2011 – to teach alongside her.
Over the three days, the pair will be will demystifying the novel-writing process and will cover key writing issues such as characterisation, dialogue and plot. They will also be conducting one-to-one tutorials with each student, providing in-depth focus on their novel as well as valuable industry insights. As always, quality comes before quantity and just 15 students will be offered places on the course, based on the quality of their applications.
So, ladies and gentlemen, please raise your Singapore Slings to the next generation of Asian writers; and here’s to Anna and Jake unearthing some of the region’s hottest novels-in-progress on their travels.
